The article I will be analyzing is entitled "Activity at North Korea nuclear site resumes: monitor". This article is about the fears surrounding North Korea's possible nuclear test. The author uses formal diction. The author says, "Satellite images indicate activity has resumed at North Korea's nuclear test site, US-based analysts said, as tensions remain high over fears of a sixth atomic test by the reclusive state." This is the introductory sentence and it is very informative. Words like "indicate" and "reclusive" are words that can show the reader of the article that the author is formal. This shows the authors informative tone. The purpose of this article is to inform the readers of the state of the nuclear bomb test. Anyone can read the article and know what is going on. The article not only informs the people of North Korea but also people from all over the world. This article appeals to logos. The author includes a photo (shown below) of the suspected activity happening on the nuclear site. This helps the argument because it shows the audience what they are doing. The article I will be analyzing is entitled "Parisians react to the first round, mull Le Pen's chances". This article about the French presidential election between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen and the controversy behind it. Right off the bat, it felt like the author of this article is very passionate about this topic. The author has presented several statistics and quotes from different people in France. The authors tone is very informative. The author states, "Macron picked up 23.8 percent of the vote to Le Pen's 21.5 percent in Sunday's first round, which saw a higher than expected turnout of 79 percent, according to the French interior ministry." They presented factual evidence that helped in preparing the reader for what was to come next in the article. The main purpose of this article is to let people voice their opinions on whether Le Pen has a chance at winning this election. Due to Brexit becoming a real thing, many people, including Emma, whose was interviewed by Al Jazeera, are afraid Le Pen will take France out of the EU. She says, "I don't see Marine Le Pen winning because many supporters of [Benoit] Hamon and [Francois] Fillon [eliminated candidates] are going to vote Macron." By using quotes from real people, the author appeals to ethos. The statistics and quotes makes the author much more credible than other sources. A group of three interns were also interviewed. "I plan to leave France if she becomes the next president," said Sabrine, adding: "I don't want my six-month old daughter growing up with Le Pen on her case." Adewele agreed and said he would move to an English-speaking country if Le Pen won, but does not think it is likely she will. Charlene said Macron had "no charisma", but people would vote for him because they wanted to "avoid having a President Le Pen". The argument the author is trying to make is strong in my opinion. Al Jazeera interviewed many people from all over France. Each person came form a different background and political views. This helped the argument come through to the reader and will make them think about their own political views. Having different people speak on their thoughts on Le Pen and her eligibility for president can help the readers form their won views based on the testimonies and statistics. The article I will be analyzing is entitled "South Korea's first black model". This article is written by Jason Strother and its main purpose is to shine a light on national identity by using Han Hyun-min, Korea's first black model, as an example. Han Hyun-min is a 15 year old who is half Korean and Half Nigerian. His mother is from Korea and father from Nigeria. The author uses a hyperbole to describe the photographers who go to Hyun-min's fashion shows. Strother reefers to the camera clicks as "rapid fire". Strother seems to be very passionate about this topic. He is an "independent multimedia journalist based in Seoul" so it makes sense that he would choose a topic like this. Strother appeals to pathos the most in this article. He states that though Hyun-min grew up in a migrant enclave, he still got bullied and was a "victim of prejudice". Hyun-min says, "Some classmates used to say things like, 'You have a Korean mum, so why do you look black?'" he recalls. "I got a lot of dirty looks and I felt people were disgusted by me." He even says "People assume I'm a foreigner... I've gotten used to it.... But I sometimes feel upset when Korean models backstage at a show don't talk to me because they think I don't understand Korean." What people do not know is that he only speaks Korean. These quotes makes the readers of the article feel a sense of pity for Hyun-min. The reader feels empathy and may even asses themselves and how they perceive people who are different. Though this article is about Han Hyun-min's big break, the article is used to talk about the growing "mixed-blood" demographics in South Korea. There are many people immigration to South Korea. About "two million foreigners live in a country of 50 million. The number of multi-ethnic persons is expected to reach 300,000 by 2020, up from 40,000 a decade ago, government statistics show." Many South Koreans believe that mixed-blood people, like Han Hyun-min, "contaminate the purity of the Korean nation". This can cause division between the people of mixed and "pure" bloods. This article can help people of prejudice realize that mixed-blood Koreans are no different than those of the purest of Korean ancestry. All of these different elements help Strother's argument, which makes it very strong. Check out the photos and the link below for more information! The article I will be analyzing today is entitled "San Jose Pinula girl shelter fire toll rises to 37." This article is about 37 girls who lived in a government-run youth shelter in Guatemala. The girls where said to have been pleading for their lives but no one came to rescue them. The fires were assumed to be started by some of the girls in the shelter who were protesting against alleged sexual and physical abuse. The author of this article uses many loaded words. The author referrers to the fire as a "disaster". He states that the girls has "pleaded" for their lives. By using these words, the author gives off a heavyhearted tone. These words are used so that the reader can have a better understanding of what the families must feel like. This article appeals to ethos. There are many examples of pathos but ethos is the most evident. The author has several quotes from mothers of the victims of this horrible fire. Maria Garcia, mother of Siona (a victim of the fire) states that, "Guatemala is full of violence... They are raping and killing the poor's girls." Another quote is one from Vianney Clareth Hernandez, mother of a 14-year old lost in the fire. She says, "It was a crime they didn't open the doors, they didn't do anything to get the girls out, even though they were screaming." These quotes help strengthen the authors credibility. The readers of this article now know that the author has researched this topic. They understand that the author knows what they are talking about. The purpose of this article is to inform people living in Guatemala about what has been happening in their country. The first four sentences are straight facts: "Families buried some of the 37 girls killed at an overcrowded government-run youth shelter as Guatemalan authorities worked on Friday to determine exactly what happened. The death toll mounted as girls succumbed to gruesome burns from Wednesday's disaster, which officials said began when mattresses were set afire during a protest by the shelter's residents. Questions remained over why someone among the girls set the blaze and whether doors remained locked as the girls pleaded for their lives. Parents and relatives said many of the young people at the shelter, which had both female and male residents, had been sent there because of abuse, poverty or family problems." The readers already know what the article is going to be about solely with these four sentences. This article can teach people about how dangerous Guatemala can really be. This can show the readers what young children can do when they are put into scary situations. Some of the girls were suspected to set the fire because they were protesting rape and other types of abuse. The shelter was supposed to be safe haven for these boys and girls but it has become a place of disaster and peril. Check out the video and link below for more information! The article I will be analyzing is entitled "Street art in Jordan: 'The world is their gallery'". This article was written by Zab Mustefa. This article is about Suhaib Attar and his art. Attar is known for his paintings on local walls and side buildings in Jordan, which is apart of the middle east. The article describes him as "becoming one of Jordan's most renowned street artists, with his work appearing all over the country" and he is only 24 years of age! The writer of this article uses emotional and unifying diction. Many of the words that Mustefa uses bring out strong emotions into the reader. Mustefa uses the words "poverty and pressure" because many people in Jordan and other countries can relate to living in poverty and feeling the deep intense pressure of their families to provide money for them so that they can all be relieved of the pain that poverty brings to so many people in this small world. Attar uses "we" in a very unifying way. One place that he uses the word "we" is when he says this: "'We are missing a lot in the art scene here because it's very hard to make a living out of it, but I'm hopeful it will become bigger as more graffiti is showing up on walls.'" "We" is a very unifying word. In this context, "We" means the people of Jordan. Attar knows the depth of the situation. His goal is to make sure the everyone in Jordan gets the chance to experience art the same way he did. He wants everyone, big and small, to find the joy in art. Mustefa does not seem to have any emotional attachment to this topic but she does want the reader of this article to feel something after reading this article therefore she appeals to pathos. The purpose of this article is to shine a light on the lack of street art in Jordan. In this article, Attar says, "The good thing about street art is that it is public, so everyone sees it, and I can use the whole country as my canvas." His paintings being displayed all over Jordan lets everyone experience the happiness art brings to people. Check out the link below for more information!
The article I will be analyzing is entitled “Pretoria: Violence erupts at anti-migrant protest”. This article is about the anti-migrant protest in South Africa. The protests started because many South Africans felt as if immigrants were taking their jobs. The writer of this article uses concrete diction throughout this piece. When the author talks about the amount of people at the protest, he writes, “Hundreds marches towards the foreign ministry on Friday”. This excerpt from the article is concrete because the reader can surely imagine the hundreds of people who came to protest the immigrants living in their country. Another example of the articles concrete diction is when the writers tells the audience that, “South African police fires rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to break up clashed between local protesters and immigrants at a rally in Pretoria against foreigners”. The author makes sure to specify which weapons were used on the immigrants. By indicating the precise elements used in the protests, the reader of this passage can easily imagine what it must have looked like. The author has a forthright tone all throughout this passage. This column appeals to ethos. The author continually uses quotes in order to make the article more credible. The new reporter on this article quotes one of the foreigners. This foreigner was heard in a video recorded by a local broadcaster. The man says, “‘We don't have hate! We don’t have hate!’ one foreign man was heard shouting in a video posted by eNCA a local broadcaster”. The reader automatically thinks of Al Jazeera as a credible source and eNCA also gets credibility as well. Another example of the author using quotes is when the writer quotes the South African president, Jacob Zuma. When asked about his feeling towards the subject of the division in his country he says, “‘Many citizens of other countries living in South Africa are law abiding and contribute to the economy of the country positively,” Zuma said”. A direct quote from the president himself can only make the reader of the article feel as if the information he or she is receiving is true and credible. It makes the readers trust the news site a lot more and make them more likely to come back to this specific site for other news. The article depicts a forthright tone because the author continues to state facts. For example, the author says from the very beginning that police were firing rubber bullets as well as using other weapons at the protesters and the immigrants. The author gives the reader no time to prepare to the harsh reality that will be given to them in this article. The purpose of this article is to inform the people of South Africa as well as the rest of the world what is going on in their country. The author writes towards the end of the article that, “The periodic backlash has hurt the image of tolerance South Africa has tried to present to the world after apartheid”. This informs the readers of this article about the damaging effects of protest in a country that has fought so long and hard for peace. The author of this column has a weaker argument. The author states, “Resentment against foreigners has sometimes turned deadly”. By saying “sometimes,” the author makes the continuous protests in South Africa not seem as bad as it actually might have been. Check out the link below for more information!
The article I will be analyzing is entitled “Donald Trump ‘committed to NATO’, says May in US visit”. The article is about the meeting between US president Donald Trump and UK prime minister Theresa May as well as other business Trump is working on in office. While reading the article, it can be perceived that the author has no emotional attachment to this topic. The writer of this article creates political diction by using very formal language. For example, the author states, “In a joint press conference after a White House meeting on Friday, May said that during their talks Trump gave strong backing to NATO, an alliance the had been previously called ‘obsolete’”. Words like “alliance,” “conference,” and “strong backing” show the reader that this information is precise. The author's tone is informational and exact. Biased language is not very evident in the article except for a few spots. When a reporter for Al jazeera asked Donald Trump about his discussion with Russian president Putin, he responds by saying, “Trump said he wanted to have good relations with Russia but played down any talk that he was ready to lift US sanctions against Moscow”. The words “played down” are subjective wording. The reporter interpreted his unwillingness to speak about the US sanctions as Trump feeling apprehensive about speaking on the topic when that might not have been the case. Another example of this is: “May took a sterner line, insisting that Putin must live up to the Minsk agreements that would put an end to Russian military interference in Ukraine”. “Sterner line” is an opinion the author has developed about what prime minister May has said about Putin and Trump’s mysterious relationship. The purpose of this article is to notify the readers of the matters president Trump is attending to. “Trump’s first week in office has been marked by war of words with Mexico over the building of a border wall, and his vow to make Mexico pay for it” is what the author adds when speaking of Trumps need for a wall separating the United States and Mexico. By reading this the reader now knows what Donald Trump is up to during his first week as US president. The author appeals to Ethos by quoting sources. The author says, “‘We’ll see what happens as far as the sanctions - very early to be talking about that,’ Trump said, adding that he hoped to have a ‘fantastic relationship’ with Putin, but noted it was possible that would not occur”. The reporters for Al Jazeera go out and interview their subjects and then come back and tell the writers about their findings. Using quotes is a tremendous way news websites increase their credibility. Quoting shows the readers of the new article that research has been done and everything in the article is trustworthy and valid. That makes the reader more likely to come back and read more news.
